From Apprentice to Instructor: A Journey of Dedication and Impact

From Apprentice to Instructor: A Journey of Dedication and Impact

Strong partnerships create real career pathways, and the collaboration between Associated Builders and Contractors of Indiana/Kentucky and Vincennes University continues to make that impact visible.

Meet Wendy Becovitz-McKinzie, a Plumbing Estimator with Ferrer Mechanical, journeyworker, and instructor for first-year plumbing apprentices at ABC.

Wendy’s path into the trades didn’t follow a traditional route. After spending 10 years in food service management, working long hours and overseeing daily operations, she realized her mechanical strengths and made the decision to pursue a different career path.

That decision led her into an apprenticeship through ABC, where she balanced full-time work, school, and raising a newborn. Starting with little experience, she committed to learning in the field and in the classroom, supported by mentors who helped her grow every step of the way.

“Being a journeyworker is a huge accomplishment for me. It shows that I found something I’m good at and was able to follow through and succeed.”

Today, Wendy applies that experience both in the field and in the classroom, helping guide the next generation of trades professionals.

“Having been in the field and passed my journeyman test allows my students to know I’m not just teaching from a book. I’ve been in the trenches, and I can bring real-world experience into what they’re learning.”

Through her training with Vincennes University, Wendy also earned her associate degree, something she now encourages for every apprentice.

“You may not need it right away, but having that degree gives you options later. And with apprenticeship programs, you’re already doing most of the work toward it.”

Wendy’s journey highlights how apprenticeship programs supported by ABC and Vincennes University create opportunities for individuals to build meaningful careers while strengthening the workforce.

If you’re considering a career in the trades, her advice is simple:

“Take the opportunity. It’s challenging, but it’s incredibly rewarding.”
